Taking dyslexia support directly into the classroom
We are passionate about reaching out into the community and one of the many popular services that we offer are specially designed short courses and in-services for schools, colleges and the workplace.
We deliver personalised courses to schools such as the one held at Shiplake College in Henley covering areas specifically requested by the college for their staff and colleagues from other establishments.
Areas covered on this course included Understanding Dyslexia – the latest thinking, The Role of Occupational Therapy with the Dyspraxic student, Thinking Skills and Language to Enhance Learning, Brain Based learning – accelerated learning and a critique of learning styles and Language in the Curriculum – non verbal difficulties.
Similar courses can be delivered or any of the individual modules can be presented as one off in-services.
Please contact courses@arkellcentre.og.uk for more information.
If you are interested in attending one of the sessions at Shiplake College, please contact courses@arkellcentre.og.uk who will then pass on your request.
Working with Schools
Specialist tuition aims to help dyslexic students benefit from their normal schooling and to this end our teachers work as closely as possible with class teachers. Support throughout the curriculum is as necessary as literacy training.
Study Skills and Mathematics
As the dyslexic student gets older, study skills become increasingly necessary for effective learning. Techniques can be taught to aid note-taking, memory, proof-reading, revision, organisation, advanced reading, and learning through listening and debating. Mathematics may be a source of additional difficulty and some of our teachers specialise in numeracy problems.
Building Self-Esteem
Many dyslexic students have experienced failure. Building selfesteem and successful learning strategies is an integral part of every lesson.
Parents’ Support
Parents' support is essential. We work to keep close contact between parents and specialist teachers. Reports are sent at the end of each term. Senior staff are available at the Centre to discuss any queries or problems that arise prior to or during the teaching programme.
We also offer Parents' Courses
Designed to help parents support their children, courses for Parents are subsidised by our Bursary Fund. Other short courses for children and students are run during holiday time.
