Specialist Tuition

Specialist Tuition is available for dyslexic individuals of all ages. Teaching programmes are devised for each individual based on assessment.

Study Skills Tuition may be arranged in intensive, individualised, programmes.

The Helen Arkell Dyslexia Centre (HADC) employs a team of specialist teachers who have trained in teaching both children and adults with Specific Learning Difficulties.

Tuition can be arranged through the Centre to take place at school, college or at the Centre.

For tuition at a school or college, we require a minimum number of pupils to be taught on the same day.

An individualised approach is adopted for all tuition and is not restricted to any particular method. A multi-sensory teaching programme is devised for each pupil. Auditory and visual skills are considered so that teaching is directed to building on strengths whilst improving weak areas. Poor motor co-ordination and speech and language difficulties are also taken into account.

Why Choose a "Helen Arkell Dyslexia Centre

Approved Teacher"?

·         Each of our teachers has either been trained at the Centre, or has the necessary qualifications and experience to work for us and has been CRB (Police) checked

·         Tuition is designed specifically for each pupil

·         Parents may have a consultation before tuition begins to ensure that all relevant facts have been considered

·         HADC ensures that each teacher undergoes the necessary CPD (Continuing Professional Development)

·         Teachers have access to a wide range of books and resources

·         After getting to know your child, we can help support his/her progress through the various stages of education up to, and including, University

·         Reports are sent out at the end of each term. These include a valuable insight into your child's progress and each one is reviewed by a senior member of the HADC tuition staff.

Tuition normally takes place in school.

Every effort is made to arrange the tuition so that it causes the minimum disruption to your child's curriculum.

Working with Schools

Specialist tuition aims to help dyslexic students benefit from their normal schooling and to this end our teachers work as closely as possible with class teachers. Support throughout the curriculum is as necessary as literacy training.

Study Skills and Mathematics

As the dyslexic student gets older, study skills become increasingly necessary for effective learning. Techniques can be taught to aid note-taking, memory, proof-reading, revision, organisation, advanced reading, and learning through listening and debating. Mathematics may be a source of additional difficulty and some of our teachers specialise in numeracy problems.

Building Self-Esteem

Many dyslexic students have experienced failure. Building self-esteem and successful learning strategies is an integral part of every lesson.

Parents’ Support

Parents' support is essential. We work to keep close contact between parents and specialist teachers. Reports are sent at the end of each term. Senior staff are available at the Centre to discuss any queries or problems that arise prior to or during the teaching programme.

We also offer Parents' Courses

Designed to help parents support their children, courses for Parents are subsidised by our Bursary Fund.

Other short courses for children and students are run during holiday time. Details of these and all our other services can be found on our website: www.arkellcentre.org.uk
