The Curious Case of ADHD and ASD:
Overlap, differences and strategies

Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder and Autistic Spectrum Disorder are terms used to describe specific symptoms that are associated with a range of learning, social, emotional and behavioural difficulties. In truth individuals affected by ADHD and ASD often have a number of overlapping issues? Understanding, early intervention and proactive management systems are the key elements in helping to support individuals concerned both in school and with peers and families.

The course will take within the framework:

1. Legal powers and duty of care
2. Supporting the development of good behaviour
3. Raising standards of positive behaviour

Issues to be discussed include

  • What is ADHD and what is ASD
  • How to establish learning rituals and structure
  • A range of Behaviour Modification Systems and Strategies for management of children including the 1,2,3 Magic Home and School programme
  • How to improve relationships with peers and siblings.
  • To consider the impact of Multi agency options for the management of ADHD, ASD and related conditions
  • How best to support supervisors with specific children. Intended impact on practice
  • To be able to fully understand and recognize the ADHD and ASD conditions.
  • To develop a range of practical interventions for the teaching and learning of students with ADHD and ASD
  • To be able to develop proactive inter-relationships with parents and carers of children with ADHD and ASD to produce greater communication systems between the school and home
  • To develop the confidence and skills in dealing with challenging behaviour within current evidence based practices.

Fintan J O’Regan MA (Management), PGCE, BSc Hons

Fin O’Regan is a former secondary science teacher and was the Headmaster of the Centre Academy School regarded as the first specialist school within the UK for children with ADHD/ODD from 19996 -2002.

He is currently a Behaviour and Learning Consultant for a number of organisations both nationally and internationally and lectures for Leicester University, the National Association of Special Needs and the Institute of Education. In addition he is the Education Director of ADDISS the National Association of ADHD in the UK He has written a number of published articles on the subject of Behaviour and Learning and is the author of the T.E.S. award wining book Educating Children with ADHD (2000.) Other publications include How to Teach and Manage Children with ADHD (2001), Surviving and Succeeding in SEN and ADHD: Impact and Intervention: (both 2005), Trouble shooting Challenging behaviour and Challenging Behaviours (both 2006), The Small Change: Big Difference series Inattention, Hyperactive and Disorganised.
